Matera is the sort of place that makes even seasoned Italy travellers stop and stare. The ancient Sassi tumble down a honey coloured gorge, church bells carry across the rooftops and the surrounding landscape opens into wheat fields, olive groves and wonderfully little else. For a destination wedding, it feels cinematic without trying too hard.

Our current edit begins just outside the city at Masseria Fontana di Vite, a historic country estate surrounded by golden fields and its own olive grove. It offers the privacy of rural southern Italy while keeping Matera close enough for welcome drinks, guest excursions or a particularly good farewell lunch.

Weddings can move between the estate’s historic chapel, gardens, pool and stone courtyard. There are 19 guest rooms, an on site restaurant and space for celebrations of up to 250 people, making it particularly well suited to destination weddings that unfold over several days.

Matera sits within Basilicata, close to the Puglian border. Bari Airport is the most convenient international arrival point, so shared guest transfers are well worth arranging.
