The “Green Gold”

After the Spanish conquest, parcels of land were gifted to Spanish Noblemen. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Haciendas were built on much of this land in order to produce henequen. This agave plant was also referred to as the ‘Green Gold’. It was harvested and used to produce a fiber for rope that was sold around the world. The fiber was shipped out of the nearby port of Sisal, which is how this fiber came to be known worldwide. In the early 1900s, with the invention of synthetic fibers, these Haciendas were closed or abandoned over time, mostly left to ruin.

What's So Special About Hacienda Sac Chich?

Hacienda Sac Chich is located only 30 minutes from Mérida, tucked away in the lush jungle of the Yucatán. Oozing old-world charm combined with modern design, Hacienda Sac Chich as an amazing location for a destination wedding in Mexico. With to-die-for accommodation on site for up to 21 people and a celebration space for up to 150 guests. Whether you are lounging with your family in the freshwater pool or dancing under the stars with dozens of your closest friends, memories made here will last a lifetime.

Tucked away on the lush grounds of Hacienda Sac Chich, Casa de Maquinas is a complex of 3 limestone buildings: Casa Vieja, Casa Nueva and the Loggia.

Surrounded by palm-filled gardens Casa de Maquina’s three 2000 square foot rectangular structures date back to 1850. Throughout the hacienda, there is evidence of its previous utilitarian life. Iron wheels and massive beams are remnants of its past. The original water tower is now transformed into a modern bathroom, the dramatic 85 foot chimney rises above the property.

Casa Sisal is the modern jewel at Hacienda Sac Chich and an incredible contemporary home that can sleep up to 4 in 2 bedrooms. Casa Sisal, adjacent to Casa de Maquinas, is set on the great lawn lined with Royal Palms allowing maximum privacy between the two areas.

Surrounded by water lily reflecting ponds, this 2000 square foot home is built in the 2-acre henequen drying fields of the hacienda and is enclosed by the haciendas original 11-foot wall, creating its own private world and the perfect space for the bridal party to get ready on the morning of the wedding.

Casita Caliza is the newest addition at Hacienda Sac Chich. Modern and chic, yet constructed using techniques from the past of the Yucatan. Built using a traditional colonial method called ‘mamposteria’, the walls were carefully constructed by hand with a method of cut stones and cement. It is located adjacent to Casa Vieja’s pool and garden area and has 1 bedroom.

So to summarise – the vibe? Well, combine the historical architecture of a 17th Century renovated henequen factory (used in agriculture and shipping, Henequen fibre is made into twine and rope) and an award-winning contemporary residence and you’ve got yourself one of the most unique wedding venues in Mexico. With an intimate lush tropical garden and pool area next to the ‘Great Lawn’ (a football field-sized lawn lined with Royal Palms) Hacienda Sac Chich provides different unique spaces to host a Ceremony, Reception and night long jungle party.

Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey all have a metro system and most towns and cities have cheap bus systems. Taxis are convenient – just make sure it’s an official taxi and that the meter is on. Self-driving in Mexico can be hair-raising and unlikely to help with any pre-wedding jitters.

Public Holidays

Mexico celebrates Christmas and Easter, as well as Cinco de Mayo in some locations (5th May), Constitution Day (5th February), Independence Day (16th September), Revolution Day (third Monday in November) and Labour Day (1st May), among others.

Good Time to Go

The best time to visit Mexico is during the dry season between December and April, when there is practically no rain at all. The coolest months are between December & February.

good to know

A typical Mexican wedding reception is usually one of the best parties you’ll ever attend. From the never-ending dancing to lively mariachi music, and the incredible food and desserts, it’s a celebration that goes on well into the night.

What Couples Say

“Words cannot describe the magic that is found here. We chose Hacienda Sac Chich for our wedding April 2022 after touring many haciendas surrounding Mérida. The second you pull through the gates you’re transported into a secluded tropical oasis that has been meticulously designed by the owners. We had an excellent experience with the property manager Jillian and she went above and beyond providing recommendations and allowing us and our vendors visit the property a few times when planning our wedding. We have not stopped receiving compliments on our venue selection and choosing Mérida as the destination. It was honestly the most magical place and we’re so lucky to have the memory of our wedding here. Our 3 night stay was perfect for our families to be together for our wedding weekend. The accommodations were very well equipped and everyone really enjoyed spending time at the hacienda. The breakfast we had prepared by the staff was incredible and the daily housekeeping was wonderful. Everyone was very attentive to our needs and helped in every way they could. Whether you’re hosting a wedding or simply booking for a stay, Hacienda Sac Chich will exceed every expectation and leave you wanting more. We can’t wait to come back! Thank you Cindy and Jillian for having us!”
